This week’s discussion prompt: What is the best “new-to-you” music you discovered in 2025…that was NOT released in 2025?
At the beginning of this year, I would not have predicted that 2025 would be the year that I finally got into Fishbone! It’s not like I’d never heard of Fishbone before – I’ve been aware of them since I was still in elementary school, as “Ma and Pa” and “Freddie’s Dead” were in semi-regular rotation on Much Music – though I didn’t like either one of them enough at the time to tape them off onto a VHS to rewatch along with all my other favorite music videos. I encountered their music every so often during my teens as well, but for whatever reason it just didn’t click for me. And every so often throughout my adult life, while I’ve met a number of folks (at least seven to ten years older than me, every single time) with similar musical tastes to mine singing their praises, I still never got around to giving them another go.
Then in May of this year during a visit to my local Hard Off1 I noticed that they had a LOT more CDs in the 100 yen racks than usual, and among them were two Fishbone CDs: Truth and Soul and their self-titled debut EP. Since the price was right and it had been a while since I’d found anything interesting there, I decided to take a chance and got them both – and they RULED! And within the next month, I’d managed to find FIVE more Fishbone CDs in the 100 yen racks in two separate trips to the very same store, and they all range from “good” to “amazing”! So now I guess it’s my turn to be the old guy at the party waxing ecstatic about Fishbone!
As always, any and all music-related posts are welcome. Have fun, and rock out with yr guac out!
