The Wardrobe Night Thread Leads to McDonald’s

Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe opened on this day 20 years ago. One of many attempts made by Hollywood to cash in on the success of The Lord of the Rings, it was one of the few to be financially successful, as Narnia was a massive hit. Also, yes, it counts as a Christmas movie since Santa is in it, and amazingly, the film manages to make it not seem silly.

As a long-awaited big budget adaptation of a beloved piece of literature, Narnia naturally had a marketing campaign to match. This included the first—and sadly last—time you could get a magical Jesus allegory lion in your Happy Meal. That’s right, Disney brought Aslan and friends to Mickey D’s in a “classy” promotion. Not only did each toy have an individual action feature, but they came with their own “storybook” which was really a diorama. Neat stuff.

I had all eight of these. My favorite was Susan, since I had a major crush on the actress who played her at the time, and I got her on Christmas Eve. Sadly I’m not sure where I put any of them. They’re probably in my room in a container stored next to the Chicken Little Happy Meal toys I got just before these came out. As an aside, I missed out on the Chicken Little anniversary headers in November, which I had actually been planning out since last year. I might put too much time into these.

Also they made a Happy Meal toy of a beaver drinking beer.

Have a wonderful night, y’all!
