Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Nov. 18

Here are today’s contestants:

– Tony Antoniades, a teacher from Toronto, Ontario;
– Lydia Boshart, an aspiring linguist from Raleigh, North Carolina; and
– Harrison Whitaker, a researcher originally from Terre Haute, Indiana. Harrison is a five-day champ with winnings of $160,999.

Jeopardy!

THE EX-PRESIDENTS // SAY YES TO THE DRESS CODE // BROADWAY MUSICALS BY SONG // STRAIT // FLUSH // “FULL” HOUSE

DD1 – $800 – STRAIT – The third-largest suspension bridge in the U.S. spans the Straits of Mackinac, which connect these 2 Great Lakes (Harrison lost $4,800 on a true DD.)

Scores at first break: Harrison $0, Lydia $0, Tony $2,600.

Scores entering DJ: Harrison $2,600, Lydia $4,000, Tony $2,400.

Double Jeopardy!

STATE ANIMALS // TREACHEROUS WORDS // ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS // TECH SCHOOLS // ALL KINDS OF LITERATURE // AT THE JIM HENSON CREATURE SHOP

DD2 – $1,200 – ALL KINDS OF LITERATURE – Using unpublished material by the original author, dead for 50+ years, 2015’s “Trigger Mortis” is a tale of this spy (Harrison added the table limit of $2,000.)

DD3 – $2,000 – STATE ANIMALS – Not surprisingly, Maryland’s state dog is this one with a body of water in its name (In third place with $5,600 vs. $9,400 for Harrison, Lydia lost nearly everything.)

Harrison lost it all on DD1 and started slowly in DJ, but was able to recover just enough to take a small lead into FJ at $11,400 vs. $10,800 for Tony and $1,250 for Lydia.

Final Jeopardy!

17TH CENTURY NAMES – He turned 30 in the first year of the 17th-century & had notions that planets don’t move with constant speed along their orbits

Harrison and Lydia were correct on FJ, with Harrison adding $10,201 to win with $21,601 for a six-day total of $182,600.

Final scores: Harrison $21,601, Lydia $2,500, Tony $2,501.

Clue selection strategy: Late in DJ with DD3 available and limited higher-value clues remaining, Harrison selected multiple times from the second row, leaving Lydia to find DD3 in its most likely bottom-row location.

Missing the layup: After his opponents were incorrect on a clue about a “sartorial combo” at a fancy restaurant that was “strictly required of male dinner patrons”, Harrison didn’t jump in with “jacket and tie”.

Pedantry corner: Not sure why calling a category ALL KINDS OF LITERATURE is better than just calling it LITERATURE, unless the writers are paid by the word.

Correct Qs: DD1 – What are Michigan and Huron? DD2 – Who is James Bond? DD3 – What is Chesapeake Bay Retriever? FJ – Who was Kepler?
