The Day Thread of the Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 10th 1975, at approximately 7:15 pm, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with all hands in a gale on Lake Superior. The exact cause of her sinking is unknown, though theories include her having struck a reef in heavy seas, being hit by a rogue wave, or simply structural failure caused by the weather conditions.

It’s almost certainly the most famous shipwreck in the history of the Great Lakes, having been immortalized in song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot the next year. I was going to post my favourite cover version in this thread, by the Rheostatics, but I was beaten to the punch on that by a recent Night Thread, so I’ll just post a video of the man himself performing it live in Reno back in April 2000.
