The Wednesday Politics Thread Pulls Off a Heist

Hello and welcome back to Wednesday. For today’s header, I thought I’d spotlight some news from around the world — specifically news not directly related to the US or US foreign policy. Let’s see what’s happening:

In news worthy of a blockbuster film starring a charismatic leading star, priceless jewels were stolen from the Louvre! In broad daylight! On a Sunday! Wild.

Meanwhile, Japan is making history with its first female prime minister. A neat news tidbit is undercut by her wanting to emulate Margaret Thatcher.

The Guardian also has a fascinating report about Chinese nationals who have gone to Ukraine to join the fight against Russia. I recommend reading about their reasons and experiences.

There may be slightly fewer cyberscams in the months ahead. Myanmar’s military raided a compound where a lot of online fraud and gambling operations were based. These operations lure foreign workers with the promise of good jobs and then force them to work in inhumane conditions scamming people over the internet. You can read more about some of those people in another Guardian article, “Beatings, Torture, and Electric Shocks: Freed Scam Compound Workers Allege Horrific Abuse” although I warn if the title didn’t tip you off already, it’s a heavy read.

An in Ecuador, an appeals court overturned the conviction of former president Álvaro Uribe, on charges of bribery and witness tampering.

Any world news you’re following? Share it below! Otherwise, be kind and thoughtful today. Cheers.
