Well, finally some good news.
Our number one movie is Black Phone 2, and for once, we have a Blumhouse offering that’s exceeding tracking. While I haven’t jumped on the “Blumhouse is doomed!” bandwagon as so many others have seemed to (they might’ve released a string of flops, but they were inexpensive flops), I will concede they were in need of a healthy hit. With a premiere of $26 million, Black Phone 2 eclipses the opening weekend of the 2022 original, which came out in the summer and legged it out to $90 million.
Yes, some cynics will point out this is respectively lower than other horror heavy hitters this year, but at the end of the day, that doesn’t really matter. Black Phone 2 is performing exactly as it needs to, and has the spooky genre pretty much to itself for the remainder of the spooky season (unless the ultra low budget Shelby Oaks blows expectations out of the water next weekend). Just like the original, Black Phone 2 fared very well with critics.
Not that critics are always enough to turn something into a hit, as Good Fortune is having anything but good fortune with a dismal opening of $6 million against a budget sources claim was anywhere from $30 million-$50 million. Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen can both be box office draws in their own right, but the trailer sold this as a “smart” comedy which delivers more chuckles than big laughs. Also, this had an absolutely bizarre marketing tie-in with Denny’s where you could order an “affordable heavenly burger” on the app which cost…more than $15. Huh.
Meanwhile, it continues to be “game over” for Tron: Ares at the box office as it fails to stay on the rails despite some positive word-of-mouth from fans. Look for this to eventually become the third cult classic in the franchise. That said, I don’t think anyone at Disney is losing much sleep over this. Ultimately a huge reason this got greenlit in the first place was to help promote the Light Cycle rollercoaster at their theme parks, and in that regard, it’s serving its purpose. Also, The Mouse House has two surefire mega-blockbusters on the way in the form of Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash to help make up for it. It’s hardly end of line for them.
Anyway, the top ten, via The Numbers
