Made another stab at getting out of my comfort zone last week and went to a block printing class at the local library. I screwed around with this shortly before the pandemic and, while it was an interesting experience, it didn’t really take, not least as I didn’t really comprehend that you needed a different mindset and timetable with this stuff as opposed to drawing or painting.

Owl and Branch; block print on paper, October 2025.
Working through the process in a class setting gave me a little more insight into what it took (whether I’ve got it is, of course, a different story), and I’m going to give it another limited shot soon (probably after I get back from Chicago). Ran by the storage unit yesterday for a little organizing and found I still had two of the old linoleum patches I’d ordered back then. They proved a lot harder to work with than I expected, but maybe I’ve learned more patience since.
The header this week is a sketch I did Sunday evening of the Second Avenue Bridge (across I-94) in Detroit. I’ve long had it in mind as a plein-air subject (and as much of it’s a recent construction, there’s a good chance I might be the first person ever to paint it if so). I ducked out of another Scarab Club sketch session early (the conversation took another obnoxious turn—nothing like relatively well-off white Boomers engaging in some live-action doomscrolling) and managed to get some of the lower-level details down before it got too dark. Hoping to get one more in from a different angle so I can practice in time for spring 2026.
How’s your work going?
