The Siskel & Ebert Night Thread Highly Recommends Tron

The Tron franchise has always remained pretty consistent critically. Meaning reviews for them tend to be split between reviews saying “well, that was COOL!” and “well, that was cool, but…”

Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, alas, around around to give their thoughts on the newest installment in the series, but they were some of the biggest cheerleaders for the original back in 1982. Back when the show aired on PBS and was known as Sneak Previews, Siskel and Ebert were both ecstatic about the film, proclaiming it to be something truly special. And yeah, I know, everyone always goes to the clips where these two are arguing, or when they have terrible takes on old horror movies (and speaking of clips, the ones they show from the movie are long).

But it’s nice–dare I say, even heartwarming–to see them embrace the new here. Tron was unlike anything that had ever been seen before at the time (and ironically, not a lot of people did see it at the time), which turned some audiences away from it in favor of going to E.T. for the fifth time in theaters. These two guys may have hated Mickey’s Christmas Carol for “not having enough Mickey in it” and “not being wacky enough,” but hey, they loved Tron. And I think that’s pretty cool.

End of line, users!
