Welcome to the Movie Club! Today’s movie is Lina Wertmüller Seven Beauties!

Seven Beauties is a tragicomedy that non-linearly follows Pasqualino Frafuso (played by Giancarlo Giannini), a womanizing and overly confident Italian man who lives with his mother and seven sisters during World War 2. He lives off of their work and spends his days gallivanting around the city with a gun in his waistband, pretending that he must defend his family’s honor. After killing a pimp, he goes on a picaresque journey in which he must debase himself at every opportunity in order to survive.

Lina Wertmüller both wrote and directed the film, which seems to have been first released in Italy on December 20, 1975, with its US release following shortly after on January 21, 1976, and a staggered international release through 1977-78.1 There isn’t much information about its production out there that I can trust, but a source on Wikipedia lists its box office earnings at $1.4 million.2 It also received mixed reviews from critics based on its Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%, but it still went on to receive 4 Academy Award nominations.3

Trivia:
- This movie is the fourth collaboration between Giannini and Wertmüller.
- Lina Wertmüller was the first woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director with this film.
