This past weekend I was lucky enough to see Jaws in IMAX. A packed theatre for one of my favourite movies included many who had not seen it before, and both the screening and the crowd did not disappoint. On the big screen the sound was fantastic and everything landed stronger than home viewings (this being my first time seeing Jaws in a theatre). And the crowd had gasps and even a few screams. It was totally worth it and I would even count this as a reverse bucket list moment. A good screening with a good crowd can be a great experience and depending on your views of a movie to begin with can even be transformative. In this case I already love Jaws so there was not much to transform, but this viewing (and one of the previews) got me thinking…

Bringing movies back to theatres is a well worn tradition (in point of fact one I enjoy much more than remakes/reboots) and can come back for a variety of reasons. I have seen rereleases, anniversary screenings, midnight movies, synergistic pairings (Mad Max: Road Warrior paired with Fury Road was the best!), triumphant returns, seasonal screenings and even rented the theatre once myself for a private screening (of the non-midnight movie variety). It does not take a lot to get my butt into a seat for a movie I enjoy, especially if a friendly crowd is involved. Give me some popcorn, one-liners to quote, splosions! or and/or a giant rubber shark named Bruce and I am all in any time!

Which now leads me to this week’s prompt: Which movie would you like to see come back for the theatrical experience (or alternatively come into theatres for the experience, like say a movie released on streaming)? There is a lot for me to consider for this prompt. First of all I would like a big movie, the kind that begs to be enjoyed on the biggest screen possible so the punches hit harder and the tension is extra tense and so forth. Second a movie I love but never got the chance to see on the big screen. And last but not least, a movie that has iconography, quotable one liners, great effects, etc. And this does whittle it down to just a few movies for me but in the end and after much consideration (In theory I usually have about a week to think about these, more if I am on the ball… which I almost always am not) I have to go with Robocop. It has everything a theatrical experience needs and is one of my all time top 3 favourite movies AND most importantly, I have never seen in theatres. With a game crowd this can be a possible all time best theatrical experience!
