The Box Office is Nobody’s Hero — Weekend Box Office Report for August 15th-August 17th, 2025

Weapons and Freakier Friday might be bringing people to theaters. But nobody else is celebrating.

Once again, our number one movie is Weapons, and it’s probably going to stay on top next weekend too. Hell, it might even rule over Labor Day down the road. The rest of August really is a wasteland, and the well-reviewed horror film (which you really should see, because it is as great as you’ve been hearing) is reaping the rewards. So far, Weapons has loaded up $89 million.

Likewise, Freakier Friday is showing a pretty decent hold all things considered. As I mentioned last week, this was originally going to be a Disney+ release, but the Mouse House really does appear to be done with placing movies exclusively on that platform. Someone out there still loses sleep over how much money they lost not sending Hocus Pocus 2 to theaters. This is obviously the top choice among families right, and is also bringing in millennials who hold the 2003 flick in high regard. Freakier has freaked up $54 million to date against a $45 million budget.

Unfortunately, that’s where the good news ends. Universal apparently overestimated the franchise potential of 2021’s Nobody, as nobody is bothering with the sequel this weekend. Too bad, as this looked like quite a fun ride, and I initially hoped the strong reviews might give this one a boost. Worth noting that the original Nobody opened when the box office was essentially dead, with thousands of movie theaters still shut down from the pandemic. It limped its way to $27 million, and it’s bad news when I tell you Nobody 2 might not even be able to surpass that. With an opening of only $9 million, Nobody 2 is performing like another Universal flop from earlier this summer, the ill-fated M3GAN 2.0.

As summer starts to wrap up, there are some leftovers to take note of. Superman is not going to surpass Man of Steel’s worldwide box office gross, but it will be able to declare itself the second-biggest blockbuster of the season in the states. The champion? Lilo & Stitch, which probably isn’t something many would’ve predicted, but what are you gonna do? It remains the only Hollywood production of 2025 to hit the $1 billion mark globally (and yes, I have to say “Hollywood production” because Ne Zha 2 is technically the biggest global hit of the year, but let’s be real, calling it a “global hit” is like the US and Canada calling their baseball “The World Series”).
