The Tabletop Games Thread Draws Steel (8/6/25)

Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!

Discussion Prompt: Last week saw the official launch (in pdf form anyway, physical books are still to come) of Draw Steel, the new “tactical heroic cinematic fantasy” RPG designed by MCDM Productions. MCDM is run by Matt Colville, a fantasy writer, game designer, and YouTuber whose series of Running the Game videos were among the first D&D-related videos I started watching after getting into TTRPGs nearly 10 years ago. They’ve also put out a few well-received 5e supplements, like Strongholds & Followers, Kingdoms & Warfare, and Flee, Mortals!

MCDM has been documenting the entire design and playtest process for Draw Steel on their YouTube channel, though I have to admit I haven’t followed it super closely. I’m not really sure what the mechanics of running Draw Steel are, aside from knowing that it’s explicitly designed to be run using a gridded battle map. Judging by Colville’s own channel, the style of game he likes tends to be more similar to 4th edition D&D, though from what I gather the designers of Draw Steel were not afraid to bring their game in very different directions.

I’m curious whether anyone here has followed the game’s development and/or is planning to pick up the pdf(s). Anyone planning to try it out first-hand?
