The Human Torch Night Thread Raps (I’m so sorry again)

Mole Man is probably one of the oddest episodes of the 1994 Fantastic Four cartoon series (which is really saying something). The most notable oddity is a musical number performed by Johnny Storm at a wedding, and…you know what, my words can’t do it justice.

So yeah, it looks like he’s meant to be singing a Frank Sinatra-style old timey love ballad. But instead…he’s rapping. And the animation doesn’t match at all. I’ve seen some people say this looks like the world’s first YouTube Poop, except this is officially released poop that you can watch on Disney+ if you choose.

Unfortunately, finding behind-the-scenes information as to why this happened is pretty much impossible, as there just isn’t much fan demand for content of this show in the same way there is for the X-Men and Batman cartoons of the same era. A huge “supposedly” story is that Brian Austin Green–who voiced Johnny during the first season–requested the song get turned into a rap number, as he was trying to launch his own career in that field at that time. That…kind of makes sense, but still doesn’t explain the animation for what appears to have been a completely different ballad which was presumably already recorded.

And that’s not even taking into account that the episode appears to have another song which was entirely cut. Miss Forbes, the landlady of the Baxter Building, seems to be ready to start a dance routine of her own when the scene just abruptly ends. Who is Miss Forbes? She’s British, snooty, and miserable, and gets annoyed with the Fantastic Four because they aren’t British, snooty, and miserable like her. Though this doesn’t excuse the Fantastic Four going out of their way to deliberately make her more British, snooty, and miserable. On one occasion, when when she handed The Thing legal documents, The Thing just…ate them. Because this was a kids cartoon, and “The Thing eats legal documents” is a comedy pitch that makes kids laugh (hell, it makes me laugh, because I’m not smarter than a fifth grader). Also, the character bio for Miss Forbes on her wiki page is only one very short paragraph long and filled with punctuation errors. Now I just feel bad for her.

Have a FLAMING night, y’all!
