Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!
Discussion Prompt: War! What is it good for? Well, it makes a good dramatic backdrop for a TTRPG adventure. Whatever kind of war story you’re telling, one thing that’s bound to come up is mass combat–that is, a scene where two or more armies clash and there are hundreds or even thousands of combatants on each side. Maybe your game is about leading an army against the forces of an evil overlord, or maybe the players are trapped behind enemy lines and just trying to get home. With so many individual characters on the board, mass combat presents a unique challenge for GMs who want to tell that kind of story. So, what rules or game systems would you use to run mass combat scenarios? And tell us about any memorable mass combats you’re been a part of in your own games.
Bonus prompt: I know very little about Warhammer 40k, but I gather that it’s designed for mass combat in a way that most TTRPGs just aren’t. So this is a good place for any Warhammer enthusiasts out there to sound off about what make it so appealing.
If you would like to suggest a prompt or contribute a write-up or discussion topic of your own, let me know in the comments!
