I am speaking to you today from the not too distant past (mid-Juneish). You see I am on vacation this week and by the time you read this I will be either enjoying fine art, the Lion King, or if you are a little late to the party watching Weird Al as one of my last remaining concert bucket list shows. But as a responsible movie thread host I decided to get off my rump and write and schedule this post early so we can all enjoy talking movies together even as I am in a different time zone.

Vacations are a part of our work based existence, built into the DNA of western civilization. We work hard so we play… as we please. So I was inspired… why not talk about vacations in movies this week. Since a lot of us have experienced vacations a lot of movies are set around them, either camping, weekend, destination, cruise, some form of adventure tourism or any number of activities there is something in a vacation movie or scene for many of us to relate to. Flight/airport delays, excursions, bus tours, there are a ton of ways to set a scene for vacationers and the viewing audience. And to think all this and I have not even mentioned staycations yet. Christmas vacations, visiting family, finding romance, tasting food, exotic locations. The list goes on and on for the many reasons for why we do what we do on Holiday, and as such the things we see in movies that we can relate to.

Ok, I think I have sufficiently padded out the read time on this (I understand this one is a little shorter than usual, but I despite the prompt inspiration, I have little to write about vacation/movie relationships). Since I am away from keyboard this week I will not be commenting as I am probably doing something really stupid as you read this (I have some adventure stuff planned). This week’s prompt: What is your favourite movie that involves a vacation or vacationing in some way shape or form? For me it is easily Jaws. The movie where they would not shut down the beaches on the island for fear that vacationers would leave, reasoning that they may prefer being eaten to not swimming. We make fun but this turned out to be a winning policy position for the Amity Island mayor who wins re-election between movies. Jaws has such great tension, shots and one of the coolest iconic movie monsters. There is a reason whyy there are so many ‘open water’ screenings of it every year.
