Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie opened 30 years ago this summer (more specifically, it has its anniversary tomorrow). If you didn’t grow up in the 90s, it might be impossible to overstate how huge the Power Rangers were, and box office expectations naturally high. Depending on who you ask, the film was either a financial success or a disappointment, opening in fourth place behind Apollo 13 and the holdovers Batman Forever and Pocahontas. Were parents just not eager to pay money for their kids to watch a feature-length episode of a show they didn’t approve of?
Whatever your take, the marketing campaign was huge. Power Rangers was already everywhere anyway, and the movie only took that a step further. This included a partnership with Jell-O, which had special packaging with “trading cards” attached (meaning they were a part of the box you had to cut off, probably with mom or dad’s help). There were also special molds, so if you wanted to make an edible Ivan Ooze as a kid, your weird wish could be granted.

However, we must take a moment to talk about this commercial, and not really the part focused on the Power Rangers. I mean, that part’s cool and all, but what’s most memorable about this ad is its intro, which has some kid on a school bus with a lunch box that starts…making noises. It starts shaking and splurging, and it turns out it’s because it has JELL-O inside it, and JELL-O IS ALIVE!!! That’s right, if you don’t eat your Jell-O quickly, it’s going to eat you! Does this count as a vore joke?
Have a MORPHIN night, y’all! You ooze, you lose!
