Ghost Fly | Aired: October 28, 2014 | Reviewed by Stars

Hi everyone. Your friendly neighbourhood Stars has returned1 👋🏽.
A little housekeeping: Sorry I haven’t been around in awhile. Went abroad, got busy, struggled with some stuff & forgot to get back on the AT wagon. Also truth be told the previous seasons Lemonhope episode messed me up a bit. A very well done episode (despite my recent comment in that episodes review thread may suggest), but a lot of issues going on for me.2 Anyways, I’ve tried to play catch up in the last week & have watched all the episodes up to Breezy (& added my reviews/recaps in each of the threads – hopefully will get to the comments too). Still haven’t caught up to all the episodes, but thanks to Cedric I think I’ve seen any important serialised stories & will hopefully get a chance to check out everyone’s thoughts & comments in all the missed threads & reviews 🤟🏽.
Now to talk about the actual episode of Ghost Fly 😅. Which I can’t quite remember why I got given it? Someone mentioned it being funny? Some BMO stuff in it… which tbh, i’ll take it 🤟🏽😏.

As BMO says at the start of the episode: “Ohhh that’s pretty good!”
Any starting with BMO IS pretty good.

BMO is learning karate, as one must, as a cute computer game console (🤭), but Jake’s got restless leg syndrome (🤷🏾♀️) and keeps getting angry with BMO.

Anyways a fly gets killed by Jake for being disgusting & comes back at night to reek revenge & havoc on Jake. This is why you should never hurt a fly 🤭!

Too much scaring & abusing of BMO though 🥺.

Peppermint is called in. Apparently because he’s got the magic touch 🤔🤷🏾♀️? A reference to his dark magic interests from an earlier season. Involving the Lich, if I recall?

Lol Peppermint gets outplayed by the fly and loses his bag & does a runner:

However, he does just enough to protect the guys, by leaving them in a protective circle. Which Finn quickly breaks by expanding the chalk circle into a random lady* & then gets possessed & turned into a Finn-fly creature.

BMO suggests killing Jake just long enough to let Jake fight the fly on his plane of existence. Makes magical sense.

Turns out Jake will literally throw everyone and anyone in front of himself to survive 👀! Well to be fair Jake isn’t really about the hero life so it makes sense, but it is a weird low level other world (it’s odd how disposable the entities are treated)? No expansion on the reality (did i miss something)?
Jake manages to get the fly to finish some ghost soup & thus ascend or something, but not before Jake kills it a second time & then Jake is brought back to life. Apparently by BMO according to Jake… BMO is less than enthused. Why are you a little anxious BMO? Could it be that you’re taking the credit for Doctor Princess’s (Princesses?) hard work of saving Jake using a defibrillator! Tsk tsk. Bad BMO! 🤭

I do love so many of the facial reactions in this episode (if not most episodes). It gives the characters a lot of life & emotion. Something as subtle as the smiling frown is enough to sell the whole thing.
A fun little side episode. Where Jake got to be craggy. Finn got to reaffirm his need for Jake. BMO learnt Karate & ghosts are real! Oooooooooo!
I can appreciate the Horror movie references, but probably way less than intended, as I’m not a huge horror film fan.5 Hot take: In a strange way I feel Horror is an inherently negative emotional creative space? As opposed to sci-fi generally speaking? I’m sure there’ll be more sci-fi references in the show though. I wonder what that’ll be?

Sometimes I like a thing for a very simple reason:

What can I say? I just think this episode is neat! I’m a big Futurama fan, so the voice actor guest stars and the character “cameos” just make me smile. Am I a simple person amused and delighted by the smallest things? Yes, absolutely. Sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy a thing. But I realize there are also a lot of interesting ideas that this episode might make you consider! Like, for example, Ralph told me that there’s probably something going on here about some cave allegory or something.6 Or maybe you can think of it as that one Twilight Zone where it turns out that those people inside the bucket are toys and when that guy sees the world above he freaks out and falls to the ground.7 Yeah, I can definitely see some of that in this episode. I love a good philosophical story that makes you ponder stuff. I’m curious to read what you all write about that aspect in the comments!

The gods are ugly!
As for my review today, I think I’ll talk a little about the world created inside of Jake. This world is, of course, brought to you by everyone’s favorite Adventure Time trickster: Magic Man!

Okay, maybe just my favorite.
What Magic Man says there might seem random, but it actually might make sense? There IS a waffle doll. And it does fall down when Jake’s stomach rumbles.

“Cool dolls!”
And he can’t eat the yellow dough (himself, basically) but he needs to eat something. However, if he eats, and stops the rumbling, the world of the waffle doll will cease to exist. Uh oh, is this turning into a Magic Man review? Maybe! Hear me out, Jake has to eat his way out of this mess. If he doesn’t eat, eventually he’ll die (along with all the Jake peeps he’s created – either from his death or from the tremors, who can say for sure). He quickly discovers that it hurts to eat himself, so he needs real food. But to get to that food, he has to leave, which means the Jake peep’s die. Either way, they’re toast. Geez, Magic Man, harsh trickery! Kind of interesting though, right? Jake has to destroy this world he created, in a way. The gif above of Finn freaking out that poor yellow doughman probably makes you think of Cthulhu. Which, fair, that’s what the Wiki says too. But for whatever reason, I actually thought of the Titan Cronus (or Saturn, depending on your preference) eating his children. So is this world Jake creates or the one Magic Man creates, playing on Jake’s deepest fears and insecurities about his place in the world especially in relation to his children? A little of both? Hmm…..

JakeAtlas holding up a Bubblegum Kingdom coin. This has to mean something…
Oh hey, look, another Titan! Aw, and some sweet family portraits. Even baby Finn. Sandwich. Nice. Cozy setup he has there, surrounded by all of his favorite things. Reminds me of how I decorated my office. Surrounded by pictures of Ralph, beloved pets, all the Japanese souvenirs, manga, J-Pop, etc. My life in pictures, basically. So this is Jake’s? Yeah, I can see it. But eventually Jake knows he has to leave and return to his actual life. In a lot of ways, this is similar to Finn’s adventure in the pillows. A much shorter version, of course. And, most importantly, Jake remembers what he did when he returns.

*squints* Bender, is that you back there?
As we all know, eating from a can of beans is basically living your best life in Adventure Time. As LSP said, “I’m doing so awesome….I found this can of beans.” Okay, obviously it’s not awesome, and Jake is clearly disturbed. Understandably! This was weird. But also, pretty neat. Do you think it’s neat? Do you have any, most certainly less nonsensical, thoughts about the many philosophical ideas touched on in this episode? Tell me I’m wrong about the Titans (I probably am!) or throw some metaphorical tomatoes at Magic Man, etc.
