Lilo and Stitch Are Legends — Weekend Box Office Report for May 30th-June 1st, 2025

Remember how people claimed Snow White flopping “ended” live-action Disney remakes? Yeah, about that…

Our number one movie, to the surprise of no one on the planet, is once again Lilo & Stitch. With $63 million during its second weekend, it fell a bit more than some might’ve been projecting, but c’mon. Stitch and his Ohana have amassed $280 million to date, and for those keeping score, it has already made more money than Sinners. That just speaks to how quickly these films can fork up cash when audiences want them, and when you consider the internet has some pretty choice words about the changes this remake made to the original (nobody likes that new ending!), it’s an accomplishment in itself that negative word-of-mouth isn’t killing this thing.

And speaking of the animated classic, it made $145 million stateside back in 2002, which was good money for what was one of the Mouse House’s less pricy efforts from back in the day. By this time next week, the live-action Lilo will have beaten that number with inflation taken into account (and keep in mind that inflation is usually generous with how it estimates numbers), with that final tally being $283 million according to The Numbers. Disney has really played the long game with Stitch as far as pop culture goes. He’s never really gone away as they’ve kept him active in TV shows, straight-to-video sequels, theme park attractions, and most importantly, merchandise. Heck, Stitch had a Happy Meal promotion a few years back for no occasion other than the fact that he’s popular! In retrospect, it’s insane that they were ever going to send a live-action reimagining straight-to-streaming.

Unfortunately, no one told Sony just how much of a force Stitch is, and I bet that someone at marketing is beating themselves up today over the incredibly poor timing of Karate Kid: Legends. In theory, this should’ve been a surefire hit, especially when you consider that the well-received 2010 remake opened to a whopping $55 million. As things turned out, Legends barely made it to $21 million, and some are saying it didn’t even do that much (we’ll find out once actuals come in tomorrow). Obviously, the Cobra Kai series has diluted the Karate Kid brand somewhat, but even a few weeks ago, this was tracking for a $45 million opening. What can we say? Life’s a Stitch sometimes.

Elsewhere, the gruesome horror film Bring Her Back opened to $7 million. Like Karate Kid, this one could’ve been bigger. This was a pure A24 outing, for better or worse, and they’ve done a good job of hyping it up as the scariest film of the summer. Did they do their task a bit too well and frighten would-be audiences off? The good news is it has a ‘B+’ CinemaScore, which as I’ve said in the past is essentially an ‘A’ for the genre.
