Nice couple of weeks, relatively speaking. Took the weekend off to do some stuff around Detroit (Eastern Market, the Belle Isle Aquarium, a cafe and a brewery which were both new to me, one of the full-scale figure sketch sessions at the Scarab Club—I’d forgotten it was Movement Weekend, but that actually added to the ambience, and Duly’s last but not least) and it was good to get some bike miles in, even if the weather wasn’t fully cooperative (I always underestimate how important consistent exercise is to my artwork routine). Caught up on painting and hope to almost get there with illustrations by the end of the month (something of a reversal of the usual worries).
Maybe more importantly, I finally got a look at the new place after work last week, and it’s kind of a ramshackle but charming house and my room will apparently be one of the best-lit natural, so this could prove a boon as far as painting’s concerned. Already excited about actually having views from my window again (one of the few things I miss about the place I lived in for the decade before the decade I’ve lived here is that it had a nice outlook on one of our minor arterial roads, as does this one—one reason I sometimes wish I’d started painting several years earlier was so I could have taken advantage thereof; won’t make the same mistake this time). There’s also a majestically overgrown backyard; I think there’s gonna be a lot more plein-air practice in future. On the other hand, there’s also a cat to consider, so I’ll have to be more careful about supply storage (which I ought to be anyway).
The header’s the historic iron ceiling framework of Detroit’s Eastern Market, the city’s de facto farmer’s market (there are a few smaller ones in the area, I believe, but this is the iconic example). My recent schedule switch means that I now have to request off if I ever want to go. It was a worthwhile sacrifice (if that’s even the word), but it’s nice to get a refresher every now and again (and amusing to navigate the ensuing and appalling traffic with my bike).
How’s your work going?
