I’d Rather Just Sing! Best Musical Number in a Non-Musical Movie Tournament: Championship Round

It all comes down to this! Just two musical numbers remain.

In one corner, we have “La Marseillaise” from Casablanca. The stirring rendition of the French anthem, taken up by the patrons of Rick’s Cafe Americain to drown out a Nazi anthem being sung by a group of Nazi officers, was the highest rated scene at the beginning of the tournament and handily defeated every opponent. In the semifinal round, it held out strong against a different take on an anti-Nazi song in “Springtime for Hitler” from The Producers with a score of 30-17.

Round 1: “La Marseillaise” (35) – “Stuck in the Middle With You” (21)

Round 2: “La Marseillaise” (50) – “Woo-hoo-oo-oo-oo” (11)

Round 4: “La Marseillaise” (41) – “I’m Tired” (8)

And in the other corner, it’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” from Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks’ films had a very strong showing throughout the tournament, but the scene where Dr. Frankenstein (that’s “Frahnk-en-shteen”) shows off how well he can control his Creature was the highest seeded of them all at the beginning (#4 overall) and is the last remaining. “Puttin’ on the Ritz” was also among the highest scorers each round, earning more votes that “La Marseillaise” in every round until the Semifinals. In the last round, this scene won out against the iconic “Bohemian Rhapsody” sing-along from Wayne’s World by a score of 30-22.
