This week will see the first week of May release of Marvels: The Thunderbolts. This movie is a double comeback for Marvel. For one, Marvel used to own the first week of May top box office spot until last year when the only movie they released was Deadpool and Wolverine in July. And other one is it is generally accepted that Marvel movies have slipped somewhat in quality in recent years, and with the exception of the aforementioned Deadpool movie they have slipped in box office profits as well. But if early reviews and reactions are to be believed there is a chance Thunderbolts will turn that box office frown upside down, and widen it slightly. Everybody loves a comeback. In movie terms there is almost certainly going to be a comeback at some point (well, in most movies). Heroes lose a battle, comedy leads do something stupid and their objects of affection never want to see them again, sports teams are down 7-0 in the final minutes of the game and Nicolas Cage is in another movie. I mean it is the perfect formula for a big emotional pay off later (also movies would be boring if characters were successful 100% of the time too) when against all odds they persevere and win the day!

But outside of the stories there are also a lot of factors to consider for the various people who work on movies and why their careers may go awry. A string of failures or a bad experience would be one of the big ones leading a writer, director, actor etc. to having to take a step back for awhile. Or perhaps some scandal means a former darling has fallen from grace. A new phenom/prodigy has not lived up to the hype on subsequent efforts. Either way they have lost “it”, but perhaps they have actually found “it” again… perhaps some mysterious force is building and they are back with a new movie. Could this be “the comeback”? Personally I hope so, I am a sucker for a good comeback myself (see below) and often find that “the big comeback” is one of the best parts of movies, or at least can be. Like when you hear the Rocky music, or the Mission Impossible theme, you know all is not lost and it is about to get real great!

So todays prompt is a double whammy: What is your favourite movie comback? The double whammy part of this prompt is: favourite comeback in a movie? and/or favourite comeback for someone who works on/in movies? For the first question I have to go with Speed Racer and the final race. I find the comeback to end the race so exciting I have a tendency to start cheering like Speed and Pops watching racing in the movie even though I (and they) know the outcome. For the more external prompt I think I would go with Richard Stanley making a return to making movies with The Color Out of Space. If you watch Lost Soul documentary about the making of the 90s Island of Dr. Moreau, he was given a tough time on that project and it was too bad as I really liked Hardware (his previous movie) and I thought his return movie was legit great. So if he had not been disenfranchised due to that movie we could have possibly had a lot of cool projects in between. But I digress so you can now discuss.
