It’s been a while since we’ve had a wrestling discussion thread so I thought I would put one up this week in the aftermath of WrestleMania and the insane amount of news that has sprung up recently.
As per Post Wrestling: Neither night of WWE WrestleMania 41 finished in the top ten on Netflix for the week, which would mean each show did less than 2,700,000 views and likely less than 3,700,000 total viewers outside the United States.
However, while this would figure most viewers for the Saturday show, it may not include Sunday show viewers completely and the Sunday show may make next week’s chart.
Out of nowhere WWE announced the “acquisition” of Mexican Lucha Libre promotion/trainwreck AAA, which the “transaction” expected to be completed by Q3 of this year. AAA announced Triplemania Regia will be going ahead in June, so it will be interesting to see which minor NXT wrestlers turn up to win their championships.
Also over the weekend WWE inexplicably decided to hold an event named “The Roast of WrestleMania” hoted by Tony Hinchcliffe, the comedian you will remember hosted the Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden last year, further confirming that the company is firmly a pro-MAGA one. Apparently attendees weren’t allowed to bring with them phones or other recording devices but shock! reports and clips have been leaked, revealing it featured a lot of racism, mysogny and appearance-shaming, with Paul Heyman in particular going out of his way to remind everyone what a piece of shit he is.
Over in Japan there was shock when NJPW announced that Tetsuya Naito will be leaving the company in May after 19 years (along with BUSHI). He had been working as a freelancer since the end of January, and has expressed disappointment at the lack of bookings he has been given recently, and his having no intention of becoming a “Dad”. It’s the end of a true golden era in New Japan as Tanahashi retires, Okada lives in semi-retirement in AEW, and Naito heading for pastures new. He is in such poor physical health however I fear for him going somewhere like NOAH, but he has never seemed like someone interested in taking a paycheck from an American country. I don’t think anyone would begrudge him coasting whilst getting that bag for a few years.
Also a whole bunch of wrestling happened!
