A Minecraft Movie can’t get here soon enough.
Our number one film is A Working Man, which many are going to tell you is a big surprise, but it really isn’t. This was an easy-to-sell actioner marketed heavily during March Madness coverage, even if it does essentially look like “Sound of Freedom if it was silly” (meaning it looks like Sound of Freedom). Heck, any excuse to watch Jason Statham kill bad guys is a good one, although this time they say hilariously stupid things like “you’re a working man” as though that is some sort of sick burn.
But the bigger story is Snow White, which we can now call an outright flop. Tracking had the princess outing making $20 million+ in its second frame, but I have no idea where they got those numbers from. Anyone paying attention could tell you that this wasn’t going to show legs, especially since every mainstream article about this one is flooded by the so-called “controversy” (“what if we blamed the film’s financial failure entirely on a tweet Rachel Zegler made?”).
Even without the “baggage,” though, this wouldn’t have been a hit, and it pains me to say that Zegler was probably miscast, often feeling out of place in her own movie, and it isn’t helped by her main wardrobe looking like a Halloween costume she purchased at Disney Store. That being said, it’s not a terrible film either, no matter what IMDB tells you (seriously, some people need to get lives!). In any case, Snow White is poisoned, and won’t reach $100 million stateside. Ouch.
Moving on, we have The Woman in the Yard, a horror flick about a…woman in the yard. I’m sure this is addressed in the movie, but why doesn’t that family just call the police? Woman performed above expectations, earning $9 million against some tracking which had it in the $3 million range.
The same can’t be said for Death of a Unicorn, in which someone tried to make an entire movie out of that one gag from The Cabin in the Woods. Even with Jenna Ortega, this was too weird to be mainstream, and reviews failed to give it any kind of momentum despite it sounding on paper like the most A24 idea ever. Next up for the hipster studio is Warfare, which sounds like the least A24 idea ever.
Also, if you wanted The Last Supper, there are currently two movies in theaters with that title. The Chosen: The Last Supper: Part One brought the faithful out in droves, despite the fact that it is episodes of a TV series strung together. People really had to find out what happened next to that Jesus guy, I guess, to the point where this made more than either The Woman in the Yard or Death of a Unicorn. Huh.
