The World Press Photo Contest Friday Politics Thread

Yesterday, the winners of the World Press Photo Contest were announced . Some cool, some moving, some beautiful, some startling (CW if you click through: some are also violent), the 42 photos (out of nearly 60,000 submissions) represent ‘an immense recognition for photographers, often working under difficult circumstances, [and] a recap of the world’s major events, however incomplete.’

Above, the bodybuilder Tamale Safalu trains in front of his home in Kampala, Uganda. Some other winners:

Supporters of the Brazilian soccer team Botafogo celebrate their 3-1 defeat over their rivals, Atlético Mineiro, and their first ever CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup.
A demonstrator in Tbilisi, Georgia, protesting the Georgian government’s decision to suspend talks on Georgia joining the EU after the European Parliament rejected Georgia’s election results, citing claims of vote rigging.
An airplane on a flooded runway in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Participants in an underground drag ball celebrate ‘Mother of the Year’ in Lagos, Nigeria.

And a video featuring perspectives from the judging committee:

The World Press Photo of the Year and two finalists will be announced on April 17.

These are tough Disqus rows we’re hoeing; be nice to each other today.
