Japanese home furnishings/clothing/general-stuff chain Muji has for the last 25 years commissioned a series of mostly instrumental folk music albums from around the world to play as BGM (background music) in their stores. They used to sell these albums as physical CDs, although nowadays you can listen to them all on your usual streaming services (Spotify, YouTube, etc.).1
The coverage of “around the world” is fairly eclectic, with albums (so far) dedicated to the music of Paris, Sicily, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Andalucia, Scotland, Stockholm, Naples, Buenos Aires, Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Cornwall, Prague, Beijing, Bretagne, Galicia, Lima, Bulgaria, Basque Country, Latvia, Finland, Poland, The Netherlands, and Estonia.
As it says on the tin, these albums are great for, well, putting on in the background when the need arises. I for one often listen to them when I’m trying to get work done in a noisy cafe. The albums are all delightful but I’m going to feature BGM 6: Andalucia, because classical guitar.
Happy Day Threading!
