Captain America Still Breathing (kind of) — Weekend Box Office Report for February 28th-March 2nd, 2025

This might be my shortest box office report ever. It’s Oscar night, so there are more important things to talk about, like weird Wicked fans coming up with new ways to claim it is “underrated” somehow. So I shouldn’t take too much of your time.

Stop applauding.

Our number one movie–yet again–is Captain America: Brave New World, so why isn’t the overall outlook…better for this one? I swear, every time I talk about this film, I worry I’m sounding like a Negative Nancy. After all, three weekends on top of the box office is obviously an accomplishment, this isn’t another The Marvels for Disney in that it’s not an outright bomb, blah, blah, blah. So far, BNW has $163 million in the bank. That’s good. Kind of.

The bad news is that the film’s chances of overcoming Ant-Man 3‘s $214 million domestic total are non-existent at this point. Captain America simply isn’t showing the required staying power for that to happen. Why? Ant-Man 3, despite its terrible legs, opened much bigger than Brave New World did. Again, no one at Disney is in mourning over these returns, but they’re still hoping Thunderbolts* fares better when it kicks off the summer movie season in May.

Now we move onto our lone newcomer, The Last Breath. This film looked solid. I like Woody Harrelson. That’s really all I have to say about it. I’m wondering why Focus Feature waited until the last minute to lift the review embargo, as critics actually liked what they saw here. Anyway, Last Breath is barely staying afloat with $7 million, which I guess means it isn’t sinking per se, but money may have been left on the table.

In other news, The Monkey is showing decent enough numbers considering what a weird movie it is, and I’m all for Osgood Perkins becoming a prominent name in horror, regardless of how boring I found 2020’s Gretel and Hansel. By the way, The Monkey ends with a trailer for his next movie, so make sure you stay for those credits. So far, The Monkey has drummed up $24 million, which is huge for a studio like NEON (also, I had a little kid in front of me at the film. Seriously, what the fuck?).
