As has been periodically mentioned around here recently, various groups have called for an “economic blackout” tomorrow, Friday, February 28th, to protest corporations’ choice to roll back DEI initiatives and otherwise kowtow to if not actively abet the MAGA agenda. Consumers are encouraged to avoid spending money at all if possible, or to spend locally (avoiding big box stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Amazon, etc., as well as credit card usage) if they must (and of course necessary expenditures such as food and medication take priority). The call is to avoid both online and on-ground spending during this 24-hour period to remind corporations — as the far right crow about having done when corporations dared acknowledge anyone but the straights — that consumers have power too.
The movement appears to stem from The People’s Union USA, a recently conceived organization that claims, “What we are building is not just about resisting corruption, it is about exposing it. For decades, corporations, politicians, and industries have worked together to rig the system against the American people. They have built an economy designed to exploit workers, suppress wages, and keep the majority of us in a constant state of struggle. These are the forces that have stolen our financial freedom, manipulated our government, and kept power in the hands of the wealthy elite.”
I confess I haven’t had a chance to truly vet the organization or event, but it seems worth checking out and, minus any alarm bells (in which case please share!), participating if possible. If you’re inclined to do so, the blackout is intended to occur from 12am midnight to 11:59pm on Friday, February 28th (no time zone specified as far as I can tell).
For more information on this and further boycotts planned in the coming months, visit The People’s Union’s website. Of course resistance comes in many forms, so please also continue to share all the resources at our disposal to let it be known that this is not the America that most of us want, and the bad guys haven’t won just yet.
Be kind to yourselves and each other, Avocados! Lay off Mayor McSquirrel, and have a good Thursday.
