In which your host restores the duplicate post from last week (hopefully), contemplates “lost” vs “wasted,” and also battles with WordPress Classic.
One of my favourite yearbook platitudes is “Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.” Cliched though it may be, it’s a reminder amidst our collective cult of Efficiency and Productivity that not every waking moment needs to be spent in service of some greater goal.
But sometimes too much time *wasted* can tip into time lost. It starts with nights lost to the habit, then days lost to recovering. It can then progress to days lost to the habit, or weeks, or months. If it gets bad enough, that which is lost can be irretrievable: family, friends, employment, health.
And then there’s always the worry of what you may have lost while being wasted. Case in point: I’ve never drunk-texted an ex (another cliche) but recently I went to pay my hydro bill online, only to find I’d already done so. This is harmless (not to mention extremely nerdy), but the fact remains I have no recollection of having paid it the first time. What happens when that progresses to sending work emails, potentially culminating in me telling my boss to fuck himself? (If nothing else, if I’m sending that email I want to remember it.)
Prompt for this week: what have you lost in service to the habit you want to break? And/or what have you found in breaking old habits or cultivating new ones?
How’s everyone doing?
