Similar to songs, novels describe places using words, rather than images (cover art and music videos notwithstanding). Though a picture, they say, is worth many words, books have many, many words, and the benefit of leaving at least the final stage of visualization to the reader. Today’s main prompt: What is your favorite example of an author’s prose description of a setting?

(Setting-wise this can be as broad or as specific as you like; Middle-earth, Bag End, anything in between. Maybe a full novel or series; or perhaps a single paragraph that stands out to you.)

Bonus: Is there a place described in a book you’ve read that you have formed a vivid picture of, in spite of either having no idea what it would “actually” look like, or knowing that your mental picture is probably different from what the author intended?
