30 Day Fictional Settings Challenge, Day 9: Gigantic Structures

Big things are cool. Also they often have some sort of attached cultural significance in the world of the story, as well as potentially lots of interior space for scenes to take place in. Maybe closer to the psychological core of it, contrasts in scale can be very compelling; a human character approaching an enormous tower or fortress evokes a sense of adventure/wonder/dread.

This category can span a wide variety of settings: past (e.g. castles), present (e.g. skyscrapers) and future. The main prompt is simply: What or which are your favorite enormous buildings or structures in fiction?

Real Bonus: What is your favorite use of real-world megastructure* in film?

Dream Big Bonus: If The Avocado were to have a huge headquarters custom-constructed, what architectural style would you vote for?

*term used loosely here to mean any standout large thing built by humans
