The Day Thread Visits Miyajima

Itsukushima, Japan, more popularly known as Miyajima (which translates to “Shrine Island”) is a small island just to the southeast of the city of Hiroshima. The island is mountainous, and home to a number of temples and shrines, including the UNESCO world heritage site Itsukushima Shrine, famous for it’s “floating” torii gate, as seen in the featured image.

Another angle of Itsukushima Shrine. As the tide comes in, the temple appears to float on the water.

Miyajima is also famous for the very tame deer that can be found on the island. They’re less aggressive than some other places in Japan famous for their deer, most notably Nara, as they aren’t as likely to be fed by humans.

One of the island’s many deer, chilling.

In the middle of the island is a 535 metre tall mountain with some incredible views of the surrounding coastline and the many islands dotted about the sea. The mountaintop can either be reached by a series of cable cars, or through a hiking trail if you’re feeling more adventurous.

I was lucky enough to be able to visit Miyajima when I travelled to Japan last year, and all of the photos in this header are my own. I’ve included a few more in the gallery below, if you like what you see above. Have a great day!
