The Avocado Movie Club #13: Christmas in Connecticut (1945)

Welcome to the Movie Club! This week’s movie is Peter Godfrey’s romantic comedy Christmas in Connecticut! Today’s post is a bit shorter as it’s been a busy week and I’m feeling quite under the weather today. 🙁

Just the regular poster today!

Christmas in Connecticut stars Barbara Stanwyck as Elizabeth Lane, a magazine writer who pretends to be a married housewife in a column she writes for a lifestyle magazine. When her unaware boss arranges for her to host a Christmas dinner for a returning war hero, played by Dennis Morgan, Elizabeth is forced to arrange an elaborate ruse to keep her secret, save her career and possibly even find true love in the process!

It looks like Christmas in Connecticut premiered in New York on July 27 19451, before a larger domestic release a couple weeks later on August 11. Financial information is scarce, but if we go by Wikipedia it earned around $3-4 million against a budget of $864,000, which amounts to around $52-69 million against an approximate budget of $15 million.

Trivia2

  • Bette Davis was originally cast for Elizabeth, before being replaced by Barbara Stanwyck soon after.
  • There is a widely circulated rumor on the internet that Elizabeth’s character is based on Gladys Taper, who wrote a similar column for Family Circle Magazine, but according to her family this link has never been confirmed.
