Color Outside The Lines 2024 Wrap Up: Movies!

Hello! Welcome to COTL, a discussion place for BIPOC. Posted the first 3 Wednesdays of the month

Thread Rules

  1. We ask that only those who identify as people of color participate in this discussion. White Avocados, while valued members of this community, should remain in ‘lurk’ mode.
  2. Shaming and hateful speech are unacceptable.
  3. Please keep potentially traumatic content safely behind spoiler tags.
  4. Nobody on this thread is more or less a person of color than anyone else. (We will not set clearly delineated boundaries on who qualifies as a ‘person of color.’ As a starting point, this thread uses the definition of ‘non-European heritage of sufficient prominence to affect one’s navigation of a society built on white normativity.’ However, we recognize that there are identities which skirt either side of the divide. If people feel that they meaningfully experience the identity of being a person of color, then they are welcome to participate.)

Last week we celebrated TV:

Color Outside The Lines 2024 Wrap Up: TV!

(the week before Music).

PROMPT:

This week, we’re continuing on from previous years celebrations by wrapping up 2024 with some of our favorite BIPOC created pop culture. This weeks topic is Movies!

Tell us your favorite BIPOC created and/or cast films that were either made (or that you discovered) in 2024.

Some films that I’ve heard word are great, but haven’t gotten round to seeing myself:

No Other Land (Powerful Israeli occupation documentary), All We Imagine as Light (India’s first Canne winner), Coleman Domingo’s Sing Sing & Steve McQueen’s Blitz.

Gonna also include this top 20 list from RollingStone:1https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-lists/best-movies-2024-1235079024/anora-3-1235180377/

Whilst the list isn’t BIPOC focused, it does have quite a lot of films focused on such topics & includes the well regarded Japanese/German co-production ‘Perfect Days.’ It’s been on my watchlist for months, but I’ve kept putting it off because it sounds so wholesome & I’ve been saving it 🥹🥲. I should change that. Maybe for the Pits nominations.

Thanks to everyone who contributed last year2 and to Moolissa for coming up with celebration threads and Sir Simon Milligan for coming up with the topics.

Come back next Wednesday for the final end of the year wrap-up: where we’ll be covering Books, Comics, Video games & Podcasts/YouTubers.

Feel free to go off prompt and remember to have a nice day :o)
