Hey y’all. Sorry for being so late with this (my day became insane), but hey, you’re all hanging out in the Giftmas Thread anyway.
Moana 2: Mo Money, Mo Problems continues to live up to the fake title I just gave it, bringing home $52 million according to studio estimates. For those who care about such things, that’s a new record for the weekend after Thanksgiving, taking yet another mantle away from Frozen II. So far, Moana 2 has made a very shiny $300 million. And the news gets only better overseas, where it has already gone beyond $600 million.
Like it or not, Moana and Maui are going to swim past the $1 billion mark with ease. Could it beat Frozen II as Disney Feature Animation’s highest grossing film ever? I’m gonna say no, thanks in part to the one-two punch of Sonic and Mufasa in two weeks. Frozen II also enjoyed repeat business that doesn’t seem to be happening here. But that hardly matters. Moana 3 is a certainty—the sequel actually has an end credits scene teasing it—so let’s hope they get Lin-Manuel Miranda back for the soundtrack next time.

But hey, what is this feeling? Why, it’s unadulterated loving for Wicked: Part One, which is still flying high with $34 million for the weekend, and $320 in the bank of Oz to date. The only bad news is that the musical isn’t quite defying gravity overseas—that lllloonnngg runtime probably isn’t helping—but it’s strong enough in the states for Universal to be happy. Wicked even has a shot of reaching $400 million, which would actually be kind of nuts (also, no, it is not going to win Best Picture at the Oscars next year, so thanks a lot for starting that up, Variety).
Not feeling the holiday joy at the box office is Y2K, which is a rare misfire for the normally cool A24. Seriously, who was this movie even for? Does anyone born after 1996 even know what Y2K was? The reviews are bad for this one, as the critics who don’t like it really don’t like it. An eighth place opening of $2.1 million is all it has going for it. Fucking yikes.
Next weekend should be interesting. Kraven the Hunter finally comes out, and Sony has been pushing it heavily during NFL games. Could it end up making a killing after all? We’ll find out.
