Day Thread of Highest Peaks: Mount Vinson, Antarctica (12/08)

Apex of Antarctica’s larger Vinson Massif, the summit of Mount Vinson is the top elevation at the bottom of the world, at 16,050 feet (4,892 meters).

This false-color image of Vinson Massif was acquired by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), aboard NASA’s Terra satellite. The scene covers an area of 63 x 81 km (39 x 51 miles).
