The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (12/3)

Well I foolishly started an arc on movie types that was supposed to go for three installments Post Apocalyptic movies, Dystopian movies, and the last one is still to be prompted but for now we are going to intermission to talk about birthdays as this is my birthday week! That’s right I am ignoring my planned out arc for movie discussion and current movie releases, possible significant anniversaries and everything and all that just to talk about me and my accomplishment of not dying in the past 362 days.

Holiday movies are very popular, from the heavy hitters of Christmas and Halloween to the Bring an Obscure Relative to Work day celebrated in Monsters Inc. Birthday movies on the other hand are much less in supply despite the fact that everyone has one. Luckily however It turns out that despite this oversite there are a few choice films that are centered around birthdays as well as more than a few iconic birthday scenes. Like I said earlier since everyone has a birthday there is probably a lot you can relate to with birthday movies, maybe you remember a crazy birthday bash you once had to celebrate the birth of your perfect creation , or that time you received the perfect gift like a ‘good guy’ doll.

I actually have a movie related birthday tradition myself. It is the one night of the year that I get to pick the movie with no objections from Mrs. Fistcrush. I try to make the movie a 10/10 banger every year (and for my tastes this is usually mission accomplished). Previous birthday viewings included Speed Racer, Black Dynamite, Lilo and Stitch, Kid in the Hall: Brain Candy, Evil Dead 2, Serenity, The Running Man, Robocop, Akira and Inside Out. This years has not been decided but I have it down to 2-3 contenders.

So, with rambling done this weeks prompts are a choose your own adventure. Prompt 1: What is a movie you love either based around birthdays, or with an iconic birthday scene? And/or Prompt 2: What would your 10/10 no objections birthday movie pick be? My answer to prompt 1 would probably be The Game. It was a fun thriller where the brother of a rich jerk who has everything buys him an integrated LARP style game as a gift and then mind messing ensues. I pick this because I think it is a good movie anyway, but it also holds sentimental value for me as I used to work at a movie theatre and get one free movie a week as a perk. The Game was my first ever one free movie. I will let everyone know what my final birthday movie choice was next week.
