I mostly take wildlife photos, but have been recently taking pictures of many other things. This week: Kingfishers! Belted Kingfisher are medium-sized rather skittish birds that hangout along the waters of Cape Cod. They have rather large heads for their bodies and a distinctive “mohawk”. They are strikingly beautiful with mostly grey feathers on the head and back and white and reddish feathers on their chest. Belted Kingfisher are one of the very few birds in which the females are more brightly colored than the male. Another distinctive characteristic of Kingfishers are their calls. Said to be an omen of good luck the call of the Kingfisher is a fast rattling chirp that is instantly recognizable. Belted Kingfishers are great birds to photograph, but for me are actually rather frustrating. They always seem to stand still on some sort of perch, but when I get ready to take a picture of them they take off be fore I can set up. Of course they will often land nearby, and start the process over all over again. Here are some pictures I’ve managed to snap of these beautiful birds
