Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!
Discussion prompt: Metagaming, or allowing your real-world knowledge to inform your in-character decisions, is something that I think is inescapable in TTRPGs at least to some degree. It comes in many forms, some benign and others maybe less so. Asking your friend across the table if they’re getting low on hit points and need a healing potion can be considered a form of metagaming, or reasoning out the location of a hidden room in a dungeon based on the layout of the overhead map. More egregious forms can include exploiting the weakness of a certain kind of monster that your character has never actually encountered because you’ve read the statblock in the Monster Manual; or acting on information that was given to another character during a conversation you weren’t a part of. Where do you draw the line between what’s acceptable or excusable metagaming and what’s worth kicking someone from your table over?
Bonus prompt: Have you ever seen a player removed from a game for metagaming, or removed yourself from a game due to an issue with it?
If you would like to suggest a prompt or contribute a write-up or discussion topic of your own, let me know in the comments!
