I was a a picky eater when I was a kid. I started to write a “What did you used to not eat but love now?” because I think I’ve done it before and it’s kind of passe.
My mind went to when I lost my pickiness and got adventurous with food. Like I assume for lot of picky eaters it happened to me when I went away to college. It wasn’t one giant epiphany but a series of smaller ones. It started with the dorm cafeteria where there wasn’t a whole lot to choose from and I was a hungry 19 year old. I managed to eat a lot of things that I resisted as a child and found out that not only did I survive, I actually kind of liked some of those strange (vegetables, stews, chicken, etc.) things! The following year I lived off campus and had to eat some of the things my roommates cooked up. Sometimes i even missed dorm food. I also got a job delivering pizzas and working at a pizza joint I tried every topping they had. I found the only thing they had I wouldn’t eat again is anchovies. After delivering an anchovy pizza I had to leave my car windows open for a week to get rid of the smell. Year after that I met the woman who would be my first wife. She introduced me to sushi. I wasn’t going to wimp out and look a fool in front of her of course. What do you know? I loved it!
At times I feel like an idiot for not trying more foods as a kid. I remember my dad going mushroom hunting and having buckets of mushrooms that I wouldn’t touch- what I’d give for buckets of mushrooms today.
Have you had any food epiphanies?
