Here’s a weird bit of MST3K ephemera. Bit of backstory required…
In 2006, DVDs were still a thing and Rhino Entertainment was still in the process of releasing MST3K to home video. Volume 10 included four episodes: Swamp Diamonds, Teenage Strangler, The Giant Spider Invasion, and…uh-oh. See, Rhino had been informed by a sublicensee that they had the rights to a certain Giant Lizard Movie, and manufactured and released the sets with said Giant Lizard Movie. Then Toho found out and quickly said “NUH-UH”, forcing Rhino to recall the sets.
A year later, MST3K Volume 10.2 was released. The offending Giant Lizard Movie had been replaced with The Giant Gila Monster. But the best part of the new disc was the way Rhino owned their mistake – they actually filmed a new MST3K short making fun of it, with the return of Joel, Dr. Forrester, and TV’s Frank for the first time since the original series! All significantly older (and less On Earth, Space Baby, and, uh, dead) than their respective final appearances, but something something really just relax.
Fun trivia, this is the first and only time Tom Servo was voiced by TV’s Frank.
Have fun posting!
