The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (10/29)

Well another spooky season of movies is very almost passed. This is one of my favourite movie times of the year. It is a time where I get to dub it Octobhorror as I am a punny nerd who doesn’t care if it’s not good or funny (often that is what I am going for). And most importantly I switch things up for this month and try to watch mainly horror, or horror adjacent movies. If I have my way I would finish out the month with 31 seasonal watches, but as life has a way of intruding on my good times it is usually more in the 10-15 range (but one year I think I made it to 24).

I have had many thoughts over the years but I think horror may actually be my favourite genre. It can say so much through allegory (Vincent Price voice: “emphasis on the gory mwahaha!”) works surprisingly well with genre mashups and crossovers. This is probably the genre most suited to B-movie fun and usually are relatively cheap and efficient to make (hench so many properties with tons of sequels, prequels reboots etc.) and practical effects often look best in horror movies or at least are showcased really well. In fact the one thing I think I dont like about horror is how much fans gatekeep about what should be allowed to be called horror, but today we are open to all suggestions!

I try to do a mix every year. Some indie, some B-movie, some schlock, horror/comedy, international, a couple rewatches, usually a horror classic or two and hopefully a hidden gem pops out. I love horror, celebrating horror, talking horror with any and all who would listen or join the conversation. So for a truly scary prompt: How was your spooky season? Do you partake or ignore it? Any hidden or unexpected gems to share? For my season I had two. Black Sheep from New Zealand (Not the Chris Farley one) was every bit as good as I remember it being almost 20 years ago. And Gozu while not full on horror was weird and delightful and I couldnt look away.
