“Put a Smile On!” — Weekend Box Office Report for October 18th-October 20th 2024

This weekend gives us our second horror movie victory in a row. This time the winner is Smile 2, which beat somewhat moderate expectations with a take of $23 million. The original Smile rather inexplicably made $105 million stateside before it was done grinning, and more than $200 million worldwide. I find that kind of shocking considering it was bleak as fuck, lacking the demented comedy of something like the Terrifier sequels or the cool factor of Longlegs and It Follows. It was just a miserable film, but when a flick originally intended to go straight to streaming makes that kind of cash, a sequel is inevitable.

This amazingly is not the film’s theme song.

For what it’s worth, critics loved Smile 2, saying it was scarier and more fun than the first (that might be enough to get me curious to go, because I hate myself). Audiences are beaming too with a glowing for the genre “B” CinemaScore. If there’s anything to grimace over, it’s that Venom: The Last Dance comes out next weekend, so I’m not sure if we’ll be looking at legs here (or maybe we will, since it’s just before Halloween).

Our other major newcomer is We Live in Time, a tearjerker romance which feels like A24’s answer to The Fault in Our Stars. This miraculously made it into the top five despite playing on less than 1,000 screens. That’s a great start for the potential awards contender, which is set to expand next week.

Elsewhere the much-anticipated Gracie and Pedro: Pets to the Rescue opened. I can’t find any numbers for this one, I guess because it made so much money that they’re still counting it. This one had a bizarre marketing campaign that goes back several months, including this trailer for an “interactive screening” which may or may not have actually happened. Anyway, it’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen. And coming from me, that’s saying something.

What else do we got? Terrifier 3 saw a decent hold, which is impressive considering what it is we are talking about here, which is an unapologetic bloodbath. One small correction from last week: I said Terrifier 3 had the best opening ever for an unrated movie. Technically that title actually belongs to last year’s Beyoncé concert movie Renaissance, but in my defense, no one gives a shit about the MPA ratings for concert movies. Anyway, Terrifier 3 is going to become the biggest unrated film of all time in the modern box office era, which is insane in itself.

Finally Joker 2 continues its inevitable tumble, although it has beaten Madame Web now, so hey, that’s something. Warner Bros. had to know this film would bomb, which is why they lied in all of the trailers for it. I’m not just talking about hiding the musical numbers (weirdly, it is similar in tone to Dancer in the Dark of all things, and no, I’m not kidding). The previews have entire scenes which seem to have been made just for that purpose. Did you think you were getting a story about Harley Quinn and Joker breaking out of prison? Too bad, because that never happens in this movie. Anyway, here’s Joker 2 retold with Legos if you don’t mind extreme spoilers. Also, how ironic is it that The Penguin is giving audiences what Joker 2 promised?
