Open Thread of Aspen Clones

The featured image is of cows. But behind the cows you can see a giant patch of white tree trunks. These trunks extend all the way across the mountainside and are actually all parts of one singular gigantic organism. Known as a Quaking Aspen, the visible trunks make up a clonal colony. Each colony is its own clone, and all trees in the clone have identical characteristics and share a single root structure.

The largest of these organisms in the Pando tree in Utah. I took this picture while standing at the edge of the Pando tree, so the tree/colony/clone you see across the way is another smaller but still absolutely magnificent example of this type of life form. Except for possibly a fungus in Oregon, the Pando tree is the largest single living organism on earth and all the other clones surrounding it are also among the largest living things on earth, making the entire area a land of giants.
