The Night Thread of Heathcliff the Cat

This is Heathcliff the cat. He’s a very famous cartoon cat, first appearing in comic strips in 1976, when the comic strip was known as “Jon.” But being the real star, his name took over before the strip went national in 1978.

Heathcliff hates Sundays because he’s finicky about being seen in color, loves lasagna, and is Nermal’s father. His owner Jon is a best-selling author most famous for his cookbook.

Heathcliff was voiced by Bill Murray in the oscar nominated Coen brothers’ “Heathcliff Trilogy,” consisting of the films “Raising Nermal,” “O Odie, Where Art Thou” and “No Catnip for Old Men.” Of the experience, Murray reflected: “who did I voice again?”

Heathcliff is known for being extremely anti-war, with a long running 1990 arc protesting Operation Desert Storm. In the story, which played out for many months, Jon is drafted but sends Heathcliff to the Middle East instead. Heathcliff there befriends three other discontent soldiers who plot to mail themselves to Abu Dhabi. This was later turned into a movie starring George Clooney.
