Spooky Lego: Scooby-Doo Day Thread (10/9)

In 2015, somewhat out of the blue, Lego licensed Scooby-Doo for a single wave of sets. They were based on no particular series (which is probably for the best, since the new cartoon for that year was the hideous-looking Be Cool, Scooby-Doo), but endeavored to capture the overall vibe of the entire franchise, complete with a wide range of spooky, fraudulent monsters.

Do you really need a Gillman AND a glow in the dark ghost pirate to steal one treasure chest? Seems a little excessive.

While the must-have set was the Mystery Machine seen in the featured image, Lego chose to expand Mystery Inc.’s repertoire with a variety of other vehicles, giving them a speedboat, a biplane, and a motorcycle in similar liveries. A Headless Horseman and a carnivorous plant were also added to the monster lineup for the first time.

I do NOT trust Shaggy to operate a light aircraft.

Cruelly, the best character (Velma) was featured only in the flagship of the wave, the $90 Mystery Mansion. You had to get this one to complete the gang. At least it was a pretty cool set.

The moving suit of armor is a Scooby-Doo classic.

Scooby-Doo was another one-and-done theme, but it really lived up to its full potential in just those few sets. The same cannot be said of the next spooky property Lego licensed, which still feels like it’s left a lot of potential ideas on the table.
