Somewhere along the way I may have mentioned that I am a Movie Geek, possibly once, or at least once each week, who can count that high? Being a Movie Geek as the title suggests means that a. I really really love movies, and b. I love to geek out or get geeky about them. Aside from going on and on and on about movies most normal people don’t care about (although this week I am proud to announce that this past week I got a co-worker to watch Hundreds of Beavers) getting geeky means I tend to wear my geekery on my sleeves or in this case on the walls of my house: I am a proud original movie poster collector and displayologist.

Original movie posters are not the average poster size; in my case I collect the one-sheets like the posters they put out front at movie theatres, they measure at 27 inches by 40 inches (41 if they are old enough as all of mine are being centered in the 70s and 80s). I put them in frames and display them on the walls of the rec room downstairs. This way I can look at and enjoy every single one of them and the memories they elicit every time I look at my walls. I currently have 11 posters on display doing a wrap around that covers about 75% of wall space and 1 to eventually get a frame for and display. When I started doing this thing I scientifically measured how much each wall has in terms of space and calculated spacing to come up with the exact number of evenly spaced posters I could possibly place on the walls. About half are inherited from my father in law who used to own a small theatre, and half are ones I purchased myself. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Superman: The Movie. Aside from being my favourite superhero, he embodies a sense of hope which I feel just a little bit every time I look at the poster.
It’s not just me either. I have two friends who also collect and both of them have the fancy metal display cases that are backlit and have an optional lock so they can display “coming attractions” and rotate posters every couple of months. Once when I was at a Fan Expo in Toronto I met a guy who was getting William Shatner to sign his Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home one sheet and was the last principal cast member of original Star Trek to sign it which I thought was super cool.

But enough about me and my showing off*. This weeks prompt: Do you have/keep/display any movie memorabilia/collectibles? If so feel free to tell us about it. Is it nostalgic in any way, perhaps a personal connection? Do you have a holy grail you would like to one day attain (mine is a good condition original Forbidden Planet poster, but well look, I get to dream right).
*Well, it’s not just showing off. My father in law passed very late August and as mentioned above he used to own a theatre and saved many many posters over the years. I inherited some of the ones I have on display plus about 5500 others. This post is a mini memorial for him as well now that I am starting to be okay writing about things a bit more publicly.
