As mentioned in comments last week, a development in fitful progress throughout September came to fruition (if you can call it that) that morning with an email announcing that the house I live in has been sold to another management company. Coming on the heels of my storage unit fee rising without notice the day before (though I may have simply checked it too early), this was slightly unnerving, even if I’m in a much better position to (at least initially) weather most of the potential changes than I was five years ago (let alone ten). On the other hand, the news isn’t entirely unsurprising, and one of my standing resolutions heading into 2025 has been to increasingly downsize in preparation for a possible move (and, given the rise in my storage unit fee, take much greater advantage thereof). I’ve already decided to make a storage trip every week if possible (helps that it’s on the way to one of my primary grocery stores) and will be mothballing, among other things, most of my sketch and illustration collections (I can always check the digital images if I ever want to make a reference).

I’ve been here for just over a decade and, while the neighborhood and the house itself have waxed and waned over the the years, my actual apartment has been convenient and convivial, especially given the sea change in my creative interests not long after I moved in. That said, I’ve gotten a little restless the past year or two, some of this related to the traveling I’ve been doing and the greater acquaintance I’ve been making with Detroit. I’m not as disaffected with my town as so many of my friends who’ve since moved down the river, but it’s unquestionably changed in the last decade in ways that had little fundamentally to do with the pandemic. Trying to see this as a potential shove in the right direction and hoping that the terms of my lease won’t be affected until the next renewal date and I’m already looking into a few other options (I’d ideally like to be ready to move if necessary by New Year’s, though my lease runs until August). I’m also hoping this won’t cut too much into all the artwork I wanted to get done the rest of the year (though accepting how weird this year’s been already and will continue to be is helping in this regard).

The header, unsurprisingly, is my storage unit after I got everything a little more organized than usual in preparation for more incoming stock. Figure I can fit at least several more boxes in there, especially if I wind up stacking them.

How’s your work going?
