Welcome to another weekend music thread, a weekend thread made for just casual talk about music that comes to mind. New stuff, old stuff, random youtube link, concerts – whatever. Plus here’s some stuff from me to fill it out.
New(-ish) Music
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE – YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING
This band is a lot, they’re definitely intentionally off-putting from the all capped band, album and song titles. Plus their aggressive album art, and cryptic menacing titles. You’d expect something more aggressively punk, or industrial, or.. well whatever you expect I think anyone probably walks away from hearing their music the first time confused. I find this album extremely hard to talk about or process really. It feels like opening five boxes of puzzles, dumping them on the floor, and seeing what pieces go together accidentally. It’s occasionally very sweet and tender sounding, before exploding into chaotic choppy sounds and screaming. It’s strange.
Old(-er) Music
Stars – Set Yourself on Fire
I actually can’t believe this one is 20 years old today. I probably came to it the next year, but this album is one that completely took over my life and shaped a lot of what I’d love. Almost top to bottom this album is gorgeous songs about love at some sort of remove – a meeting with an ex from a different lifetime; living in a moment of happiness you know will end soon; remembering the very beginning of a relationship (that of course has already ended by time the song begins); swimming in an eternal feeling pause of hesitating to say you love someone… this album is beautifully nostalgic and energetic and lively all at once. While the songs are often at a remove and can on their surface feel a little cold, they rarely actually are because just how bright the feelings and memories can still burn.
I don’t think Stars have ever come close to recapturing what makes this album sound so perfect. They’ve made good later albums, like their dancier album ten years on from this No One Is Lost, but the specific combination (and balance) of theatricality and earnestness they’ve never quite nailed again after this.
Some Live Videos
An older Spirit of the Beehive live show recently uploaded:
An older one that I’m seeing now, looking through the WNXP channel. Middle Kids are a band I’m always forgetting about, but when I remember them I’m always happy:
Sadly just a song, but here’s Caroline Rose from a weird show I saw …forever? ago that recently got posted:
