The Night Thread Will Have a Big Mac, McDLT, a Quarter Pounder with some cheese…

You know what this site needs? More threads about McDonald’s and commercials. In 1988, McDonald’s came up with one of those brilliant ad campaigns guaranteed to get stuck in the heads of every person in America. Using Reunion’s “Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)” as a starting point, they wrote a patter song that listed off every item on the McDonald’s menu at the time. Then, they printed a whopping eighty million cardboard and flexidisc records with the jingle on it. All but one of those records had an incomplete version of the jingle. The remaining one record had the full song, and came with a million dollar prize. Those records were distributed through newspapers and other channels, and were the focus of a huge ad campaign. Of course, the losing record has been uploaded to YouTube so we can all experience the feeling of not winning a million dollars but getting a song stuck in your head instead.

If you’re curious what the winning record sounds like…well, Vice did a follow-up with the winner a few years ago and it got pretty depressing. Best to stick with the happy jingle – and boy howdy, did McDonald’s do exactly that. Outside of the contest, the song popped up in their ads worldwide for the next few years – two different American versions, two different Canadian versions (featuring Karyn Parsons, Hillary from The Fresh Prince), an Australian version, a French version for Quebec, and two versions for Hong Kong (with the same cast!) in both English and Chinese. And because nothing in pop culture can ever die, Lil Yachty redid the song this year.

Have a great night, everyone!
