The August 15 Day Thread of the Uncontacted Sentinelese People

The Sentinelese People live on North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Begal. It is believed that they have remain uncontacted for thousands of years, as their language resembles no other known language in use. Estimates on the tribe’s numbers range from 35 to 500 members, but most commonly 50 to 200.

In 1967, Indian anthropologist T.N. Pandit ventured to the island. From the boat, his team saw the Sentinelese, but they retreated into the forest by the time the team made landfall. They discovered their lean-tos, tools and weapons, and still warm fires, but no people. In 1970, India claimed the island as part of their land. The Indian government sent outreach teams to the island from 1991 to 1997, but most attempts were futile in building relations so the island and the tribe were placed in protected status.

People have attempted to contact the tribe. Most, if not all attempts, have ended in death. In 2018, an American Christian missionairy attempted to make contact, and the tribe killed him… but not before laughing at his songs of worship he sang to them.
